Murano glass is composed mainly of very pure silica sand which becomes liquid when melted at high temperatures.

In the passage from the liquid state to the solid state there is an interval in which the Murano glass becomes soft and malleable thus giving the master the possibility to shape it, in fact a greater presence of sodium oxide allows the Murano glass to solidify more slowly and this is a very important factor since it gives the master more time to work. There are various raw materials that can be added to the silica sand, such as sodium which makes the surface of the glass opaque, nitrate and arsenic which are necessary to eliminate bubbles and other metal oxides thanks to which the Murano glass takes on different colors.

Each color comes from the addition of a different oxide which determines its intensity based on the quantity used.

As regards the processing, we have the division into two phases, the first process which includes those procedures that use raw materials such as sand, soda, raw glass and other compounds, then there is the second process which consists of the lume processing, that is one of the Murano techniques where the master finds himself face to face with the glass material and works it with glass rods, glass fusion and "cold" processes such as decoration, engraving and grinding.
